If you are concerned about your kids having been exposed to bed bugs at the summer camp , here are some advice:
- Open the child's luggage outside or in your garage, empty all content in a plastic bag that is well secured.
- Then and only then bring it to the washmachine and empty the bag's content in it.
- Hot-water wash and put your child's bedding and clothing in the dryer for at least 40 minutes.
- Another method is to place all your child’s bedding
& clothing into a black plastic garbage bag, secure it well, then put it out in the hot sun for a day as heat can kill this pest.
- Do the same with the luggage and shoes: put them in a plastic bag, secure it tightly and leave it outside during a hot day, all day.
- Examine your child for any bites that have a white-appearance with a red dot. Also watch for complaints of
intense itching. Remember that on average, half of the people do not react to bed bug bites.
- Contact your family physician if any of these
symptoms occur.

Chestnut Hill to be precise! Top notch apartment complex. Me and Malamar, we love these kinds of environment. Clean, vacuumed, clutter in some units - but organized-, ahh! we love to sniff out those places.
The old ladies were so nice even though some called us "nice pooch". I'm not a pooch! I'm the Regal Beagle and Malamar is the e-Nergetic Jack-a-be. If anything, Malamar is the pooch, not me! I'm pure-blood, I seem to remember.
But we enjoyed the sniffing around. In one of those units, the mother refused to step out of the apartment with her 3 kids.
News to me!
So, here I am performing my sniffing duties in one of the girls's bedroom, when suddenly the door opens and the little girl shouts "these are my toys! Don't touch them" .
Well, I beg to differ, but occasionally I will un-intentionally touch items with my nose because I am so focused on finding these bed bugs that I cannot, Read-My-Sniffs, stop in my endeavor to localize them.
My handler came to my rescue. I love her. And the little girl got comforted with a nice nudge and plenty of attention from me at the conclusion of the inspection.
I love my job...
No one is spared from bed bug infestations, including a leading child welfare and behavioral health organization in Central Mass. Off we go, Nicki, Malamar and I to detect bed bugs. I will keep you posted with our findings.
Norton, MA then Canton, MA. We are getting more and more calls. Nicki and I love it. This is me, Malamar, the e-nergy Beagle.. We just love sniffing out new homes. Especially those that are so clean and don't have any pets. Although, I have to admit that we, Nicki the Regal Beagle and I, Malamar, woof-like ("like" for you humans who don't speak dog's language)) pets. Our handler does not. What is wrong with her! She is from Luxembourg, Europe. Figure!!!! But we love her. She feeds us every day. Because we find those elusive little bed bugs. We find bed bugs where experts can't!
It took 3 canine/handler teams and 4 hours of inspection time to perform this canine inspection on a record-breaking heat temperature day in Boston, yesterday.
We called off the inspection after 4 hours during the peak heat of the day when our bed bug dogs started panting a lot and slowed down. We will resume and finish this bed bug inspection in Boston, on another day.
Heat-exhaustion can be fatal for dogs - we just did not want to take any chances. No one can predict in advance of a scheduled appointment what the weather will be like. Fortunately, everyone understood and we were very thankful for that.
And yes, our dogs did alert to several rooms being infested with bed bugs. They nipped it in the bud before it got out of control and we were proud of our dogs.
Malamar taking a nap after a canine bed bug inspection job in Allston today. A multi-units apartment complex, basically rented out to college students. Ah! the days of College. Long gone, so much fun indeed. But I certainly do not remember living in such disastrous, messy, cluttery, dirty conditions. Especially the kitchen area.
Oh well! Malamar is perfect for this type of inspection job. She just follows my lead and sniffs out everywhere and everything. She was not too distracted by a cat that was running loose in one of the units. Genrally, she would go wild at the sight or smell of a cat. And another unit has a dog in it.
Kudos to Malamar who just behaved.
Off to Carlisle, MA for yet another residential bed bug inspection. These people were helping their sisters move out and into a new apartment. And found out she had had a bed bug infestation. So now they want to know if they brought those great hitchhickers back into their home. I get a lot of these types of requests. Off we go, Nicki and Malamar and I...
Lately we have been doing bed bug dog inspections all over the place in VT, RI, Boston, Newton, Allston, Somerville and we are on the brink of landing a big contract with a well-known, large property management company for repeat business. Kudos to Nicki and Malamar!
A 2-decker near Boston. First floor was impeccably clean and well-kempt. Just a stunning apartment with old wooden panels and the people were so cooperative and so professional.
The top apartment, where the bed bug infestation had started was just absolutely horrific. These were relatively young people - I could smell the drugs - I am very sensitive to that. No self-respect, and the place looked literally destroyed, disgustingly filthy and just unsafe. I swear I saw needles near one of the beds. Food all over the floor as well as ashes. I was so shocked, I even forgot to take pictures.
At any rate, I declined to perform the inspection as it was unsafe and un-healthy to my dogs.
They dared look at me in dis-belief but I held my ground!
I mean, seriously!
