The biggest jumps in bed bug infestations were seen in hospitals, schools and day care centers, taxis, and public transportation.
According to the latest study conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the University of Kentucky, the biggest increase in infestations was reported in hospitals, schools and day care centers, taxis and public transportation.
So you think that taking all the necessary precaution upon leaving your hotel room is enough. Think again. You could pick up bed bugs from that taxi you jump in. Or on the subway on your way to your hotel room after that late-night movie or theater performance you went to. And what about these conference rooms you stayed at while attending seminars. As a matter of fact, last year during one of the seminars at the NPMA conference in October, the speaker happened to bring to our attention that we might be sitting just nice and dandy here for an hour or two, while some bed bugs are feasting on us or hitching a ride home.
I couldn't help but observe many attendees checking themselves out and/or scratching themselves at the thought.
So if you find yourself wondering, call us at 508-713-8267 and we'll have our dogs determine if you brought them home with you. Below is information as reported by By Michael F. Potter, Ph.D., Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., and Missy Henriksen.
I was told not too long ago about this couple who had had a recurring bed bug infestation in their house over the course of 2 years or so.
They eventually sold their house and moved into a new one.
Makes you wonder about their real motive for moving. And clearly, the PCO who related this story to me couldn't guarantee that the bed bugs were 100% eliminated before they moved out.
So, if I was buying a house, I would want to see some sort of certification from the real estate agent that states that the house I am in the process of buying is clear of bed bugs.
And for you, realtors: a bed bug inspection before closing can save you time, money and future litigations. Wouldn't you want to give your buyer confidence in the property they are purchasing.

More than a third of pest-management companies in the U.S. were called in by hospitals in 2012 to exterminate bedbugs, according to a new survey by the National Pest Management Association. MarketWatch's Jim Jelter reports. (Photo: AP) Click here to see this video.

"Using dogs trained to detect bed bug infestations is an emerging industry, and a better understanding of the chemical basis of canine detection will hopefully contribute to a harmonization of training and detection methods..."

I received a call from this landlord who owns a 6-apartment complex. He needed to have our beagles inspect 2 of these units as they had been a recurring problem with bed bugs. He had had the units treated several times in teh past and wanted to finally "nip it in the bud" as he put it.
But in the process of listening to him, it became evident that he did still have an infestation. In addition, he opted to go with a heat treatment this time, as pesticide applications in the past, for whatever reason, had not worked so far.
We explained that the dog detection was a moot point since he knew he had bed bugs and since a guaranteed heat treatment with this particular pest control company would eradicate these elusive bed bugs.
