According to the latest study conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the University of Kentucky, the biggest increase in infestations was reported in hospitals, schools and day care centers, taxis and public transportation.
So you think that taking all the necessary precaution upon leaving your hotel room is enough. Think again. You could pick up bed bugs from that taxi you jump in. Or on the subway on your way to your hotel room after that late-night movie or theater performance you went to. And what about these conference rooms you stayed at while attending seminars. As a matter of fact, last year during one of the seminars at the NPMA conference in October, the speaker happened to bring to our attention that we might be sitting just nice and dandy here for an hour or two, while some bed bugs are feasting on us or hitching a ride home.
I couldn’t help but observe many attendees checking themselves out and/or scratching themselves at the thought.

- Nursing homes – 46 percent (46 percent in 2011; 25 percent in 2010)
- Office buildings – 36 percent (38 percent in 2011; 18 percent in 2010)
- Schools and day care centers – 41 percent (36 percent in 2011; 10 percent in 2010)
- Hospitals – 33 percent (31 percent in 2011; 12 percent in 2010)
- Transportation (train/bus/taxi) – 21 percent (18 percent in 2011; 9 percent in 2010)
- Movie theaters – 10 percent (17 percent in 2011; 4 percent in 2010)
